Global Business Innovation Programme to Tokyo, Japan - Battery Technologies

About This Event

Is your business looking to create innovative partnerships in the Battery Technology sector?

What is the Innovate UK Global Business Innovation Programme?

The Global Business Innovation Programme – Battery Technologies is a funded offering organised by Innovate UK as part of UKRI and delivered by Innovate UK EDGE, to help innovative UK businesses explore global opportunities to grow and scale.

Consisting of a three-phase programme - get ready for the market, visit the market and exploit the opportunity, the Global Business Innovation Programme is designed to provide valuable insights to gain detailed market knowledge, introductions and cultural benefits to enable you to effectively access and exploit a market with new collaborations and partnerships, which businesses would find difficult to obtain themselves.

You will receive invaluable wraparound support by an expert innovation & growth specialist, who will help your business maximise the opportunities identified, including developing innovation projects with partners in the territory.

Why apply to attend Battery Technologies in Japan?

This Global Business Innovation Programme visit focuses on Japan’s thriving science and technology system. A powerhouse of battery innovation, Japan has major companies such as Panasonic and Toyota applying for more than a third of international patents in this field.

This initiative is particularly relevant for businesses that focus on propulsion battery development, new and emerging battery technologies (automotive battery and sub-components) and businesses that provide stationary storage solutions for both grid and home.

The key considerations for this programme will be on:

  • High performance batteries
  • Routes to low cost, critical material free batteries
  • Next generation technologies
  • Recycling and second life

Batteries will play an important role in helping to achieve the net-zero target by 2050. Although this area is a key strength for Japan, there are many unique opportunities for international business partnerships to help tackle some of the key challenges faced in the market.

Japan is the world’s 3rd largest research & development investor and the 5th largest producer of high-quality science, with government and private companies heavily invested in developing and manufacturing next-generation batteries. It aims to mass produce automotive batteries with higher energy density by 2030 with the goal of Electric Vehicles accounting for 100% of new passenger car sales by 2035.

The Green Innovation Fund will be investing approximately £1bn for research & development on the next-generation of automotive batteries and motors, following an announcement to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

How does the Global Business Innovation Programme work?

The Global Business Innovation Programme is structured around three main phases and each business will have a designated Innovate UK EDGE innovation and growth specialist to support them for the duration of the offering, including developing an action plan to capitalise on the opportunities identified.

The three main phases of the Global Business Innovation Programme are:

Phase 1: Getting ready for the market

Pre-activity briefing workshop to build knowledge and understanding of the market and potential opportunities, including how to do business, cultural aspects, how to protect your IP and training on how to improve your pitch and articulate your value proposition (one day workshop).

Phase 2: Visiting the market

Explore the innovation opportunities in Japan first-hand through meeting with key companies and research organisations and potential collaborators and partners through pre-arranged meetings and organised matchmaking and attending the Battery Japan Expo.

Phase 3: Exploiting the market

An exploitation workshop and one-to-one support from an Innovate UK EDGE innovation and growth specialist to follow up and take advantage of the opportunities identified.
