Boost your global technology presence and create innovative partnerships in the 5G industry

What is the Innovate UK Global Business Innovation Programme?

The Global Business Innovation Programme – 5G is a funded offering organised by Innovate UK as part of UKRI, and delivered by Innovate UK EDGE, to help innovative UK businesses explore global opportunities to grow and scale.

Consisting of a three-phase programme - get ready for the market, visit the market and exploit the opportunity, the Global Business Innovation Programme is designed to provide valuable insights, and gain detailed market knowledge, introductions and cultural benefits. To enable you to effectively access and exploit a market with new collaborations and partnerships, which businesses would find challenging to obtain themselves.

You will receive invaluable wrap-around support from an expert innovation & growth specialist, who will help your business maximise the opportunities identified, including developing innovation projects with partners in the territory.

Why apply to attend 5G technology in Japan?

This Global Business Innovation Programme visit focuses on Japan’s game-changing cellular technology system. Japan is embracing 5G and is expected to become the dominant force in cellular technology by 2026.

With the country leading the way in cellular technology, a multi-national company, SoftBank, aims to deploy over 50,000 5G base stations to target 90% of the population by March 2022.

This initiative is particularly relevant for businesses that focus on the diversification of the UK’s 5G ecosystem, including enhanced cybersecurity, speed of deployment and a reduction in the integration barriers. The key considerations will be on:

  • Open RAN and openness within 5G telecoms
  • Industrial uses of 5G technology / Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Private and localised 5G

The partnership is an opportunity for innovative UK businesses to collaborate with Japan around the application of 5G technology - a significant catalyst for future innovation and economic growth.

How does the Global Business Innovation Programme work?

The Global Business Innovation Programme is structured around three main phases and each business will have a designated Innovate UK EDGE innovation and growth specialist to support them for the duration of the offering, including developing an action plan to capitalise on the opportunities identified.
